What is an ideal customer profile (ICP)?
Also called: ICP, Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) in MedTech
An ideal customer profile (ICP) describes the organizations most likely to buy from you and succeed with your product, defined by attributes such as type, size, specialty, geography, technology and buying signals.
Why it matters for healthcare sales and marketing
An ICP keeps sales and marketing focused on accounts that convert and stay. Without one, teams chase every lead, lists get too broad, and campaigns underperform.
How it works
- Organization type: hospital, health system, practice, surgery center, health plan, manufacturer.
- Size: beds, providers, locations or revenue.
- Specialty or service line where your product applies.
- Geography you can serve.
- Technology you integrate with or replace.
- Signals: growth, new programs or intent that suggest timing.
Pair the ICP (which organizations) with buyer personas (which people inside them).
Example
Illustrative scenario. An orthopedic device company reviews its best customers and finds they are mostly physician-owned surgery centers doing a high volume of joint procedures. It writes that into its ICP, builds a list of matching centers, and targets their administrators and surgeon owners.
Common mistakes
- Too broad. "All hospitals" isn't an ICP.
- Based on wishes, not data. Build it from your best current customers.
- Never updating it. Revisit as products and markets change.
