What is firmographic data in healthcare?

Also called: firmographic data, organization data

Firmographics are attributes that describe an organization rather than a person, such as its type, size, ownership, location and specialties. In healthcare they include details like bed count, number of providers, care settings and health system affiliation.

Why it matters for healthcare sales and marketing

Most healthcare products fit some organizations far better than others. Firmographics let you define your ideal customer profile and filter lists to the hospitals, practices or plans that match it.

How it works

  • Type: hospital, health system, physician practice, surgery center, clinic, health plan, manufacturer.
  • Size: beds, providers, locations, revenue or employees.
  • Ownership: independent, health system-owned, private equity-backed, public, nonprofit.
  • Location: state, region, urban or rural.
  • Services: specialties, service lines and programs offered.

Firmographics describe the organization; technographics describe its technology; contact data describes the people.

Five firmographic attributes for healthcare organizations: type, size, ownership, location and services.
Firmographics describe the organization; combine them to define your ideal customer profile.

Example

Illustrative scenario. A staffing software vendor targets community hospitals in a bed-size range, outside large health systems, in three regions. Firmographic filters narrow thousands of hospitals to a few hundred that match its best customers.

Common mistakes

  • Using size alone. Combine size with type, ownership and services.
  • Ignoring health system ownership. It often decides who buys.
  • Confusing firmographics with contacts. You still need the right people.
