What is HCP reference data?
Also called: customer master data, HCP master data, IQVIA Data Ecosystem
HCP reference data is the master list of healthcare professionals and organizations, with stable IDs and affiliations, that a life sciences company uses as the single source of truth in its CRM, sales operations and compliance reporting.
Why it matters for healthcare sales and marketing
Pharma and MedTech companies run territory alignment, call planning, incentive compensation and compliance reporting on top of their customer master. If the same physician appears twice, or is linked to the wrong hospital, every downstream report is wrong. Reference data providers such as IQVIA OneKey and Veeva OpenData sell this master data, often integrated with CRM.
How it works
- Stable IDs for each HCP and HCO, cross-referenced to identifiers such as NPI.
- Affiliations linking professionals to hospitals, practices and health systems.
- Change management: updates when people move, and processes for field teams to request corrections.
- Compliance uses, such as identifying recipients accurately for U.S. Open Payments reporting.
A campaign contact list is different: it is built for reaching an audience and includes verified business emails and phones, which reference data may not.
Example
Illustrative scenario. A specialty pharma company keeps its CRM aligned to a reference data provider for field sales. For a non-personal email campaign to a broader audience, it buys a verified contact list, matches it to its master data on NPI, and suppresses physicians who have opted out in CRM.
Common mistakes
- Using a campaign list as your master data. They serve different purposes.
- Not matching on a stable key. Use NPI to connect contact lists to master data.
- Letting suppressions drift apart. Opt-outs in CRM must apply to every campaign list.
